Red Sox vs. Yankees 9-16-06: Game 1

In the first game of this 4 game series and the first of the Double Header. Chien-Ming Wang vs. Josh Beckett for the Red Sox.

In the top first inning, the Red Sox got off to a pretty good start with runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out after Ortiz hit a fair ball to right field. Willy Mo Pena struck out for the second out. Next batter was Trot Nixon who grounded out to the second baseman.
The bottom of the Inning came a 1,2,3 inning for Beckett. Throwing out Damon, grounding out to third was Jeter and grounding out to first was Abreau.

Top of the second was a 1,2,3 inning for Wang.
The bottom of the inning was not good for Beckett, walking 1 and then Cano hit a HR and two people on with 1 out. Then a questionable HBP call to load the bases for Damon. Luckily Damon grounded into a 4-6-3 Double Play to end the inning but the Yankees put a two spot on the board in the second

Third inning wasn’t anything big to report, a quick inning.

Top 4, with an error for Jeter, they were unable to close out the inning with a double play and the Red Sox score two runs to tie the game at two. Then Doug came in from third on a a ground out to first making it 3-2 Red Sox.

Through the next few innings was very close with good pitching and fielding for each side. In the top of the 7th, Yankees walked 4 consecutive batters to make the score 4-2 Red Sox. Up next was Mike Lowell with 1 out and the bases juiced and strikes out along with Eric Hinske to end the inning leaving 3 on bases.

Beckett was done when Corey came in for the 7th inning. There were a few times that the Sox were in trouble but headed into the 9th winning 4-2.

The ninth inning started off with a double by Mark Loretta and an IBB for Ortiz. Willy Mo Pena struck out giving way for Trot Nixon to hit for a fielders choice to second for the 2nd out with runners on first and third. With a wild pitch, Loretta comes home for a 5-2 lead. Mike Lowell walks to put runners on 2nd and 3rd for Carlos Pena hit it back to the mound to end the top 9.

Bernie Williams gets a single to lead of the 9th inning against Mike Timlin. Kaplar runs down a fly ball to get the 1st out. Jeter strikes out for out number 2. Joege Posada pinch hits for Bobby Abreau. Timlin strikes out Posada to end Game 1 of the Day/Night Double header.

The Red Sox are trying to come back into the Wild Card race and the playoffs. This rivalry could get to be its worst if the Sox come back to win the Wild Card. A few more hours till Game Two.
