Red Sox vs. Yankees – June 3, 2007

Since I was up at Plymouth yesterday, I was unable to write about the game so here is a brief summary. Red Sox won 11-6 in a great game, however there were two problems in the game. Kevin Youkilis had his 23 game hitting streak broken and Doug Mientkiewicz (NYY former Red Sox player) suffered a concussion from a blow to the head from Mike Lowell’s knee. He also has cervical sprain and a fractured bone in wrist. He is going to be out for 6-8 weeks.

Now tonights game: Josh Beckett (8-0) vs. Andy Pettitte (3-4)

The Yankees started off the second inning with a 1-0 lead that they held until the top of the fifth when they got 3 more runs to lead 4-0. In the bottom of the 5th, the Red Sox did what they do best which is attack offensively.

Jason Varitek, Willy Mo Pena and Coco Crisp got on base to load the bases for the Red Sox. After Lugo struck out, Pedroia hit a bases clearing double making the score 4-3. Ortiz was up next and hit a triple bringing Pedroia home to tie the game. Next they walked Manny intentionally and Kevin Youkilis popped a sacrifice fly to center to bring Ortiz home to take the lead 5-4.

In the 8th, Okajima blew the lead when the Yankees tied it up 5-5 making it so Josh Beckett could not be 9-0. In the Red Sox half, Varitek and Willy Mo went down quickly but then Crisp walked and Lugo got a base hit, however Bobby Abreau made an amazing catch on Pedroia’s hit that would have put the Red Sox ahead by 1 or 2.

In the 9th, A-Rod hit a home run off of Papelbon (2nd HR allowed) to give the Yankees a 6-5 lead going into the bottom of the 9th. Ortiz hit a fly ball to Abreau, Manny struck out, Youk got hit by the pitch and Mike Lowell struck out to end the game losing 6-5

The Red Sox lead the Yankees by 12 1/2
