21 Movie Review: ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’

Tonight I went to go see 21: The Movie with my best friend Kristin and we both enjoyed it a lot. Even though the critics said that it was an awful movie, it was gripping and kept my attention the whole time.

Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) is an MIT student who ‚?? needing to pay school tuition ‚?? finds answers in counting cards. As a superior math and statistics student, he is recruited to join a group of mathematically-gifted students that heads to Las Vegas every weekend with fake identities and the know-how to turn the odds at blackjack in their favor. Unorthodox math professor Mickey Rosa (Kevin Spacey) leads the way. By counting cards and employing an intricate system of signals, the team can beat the casinos. Drawn by the money, the Vegas lifestyle, and his teammate, Jill Taylor (Kate Bosworth), Ben begins to push the limits. Though counting cards isn‚??t illegal, the stakes are high, and the challenge becomes not only keeping the numbers straight, but staying one step ahead of the casino’s menacing enforcer, Cole Williams (Laurence Fishburne).

Kristin was “stressed” for most of the movie because she was so into it. Speaking of being into it, Kate Bosworth stated that to do the love scene with her screen counterpart, they both got completely hammered on, what she believes to be, Grey Goose. She also said that at one point she couldn’t stand up and then blacked out.

*** SPOILER ALERT **********
“What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”, however, that statement can mean different things to different people. For someone like Ben who grew up in Southie, and was trying to pay for Harvard Medical School while working at minimum wage, you would expect him to only win. However, what happens when the urge takes over your whole body making you unaware of what you are pulling yourself into. For Ben, that was what happened. He was up $315,000 when everything went horribly wrong.

He lost $200,000 of Mickey’s money and instead of going back to Boston, Ben tried to get it back. Mickey opted to rat him out and get have him get beat up by “security” (Loss Prevention Enforcer). Mickey then stole all of Ben’s money, didn’t let him graduate from MIT which dropped his chance at getting into HMS. He had nothing to win, nothing to lose and he went to Mickey to try and make a deal with him and get his life back on track.

Ben, however, was plotting against Mickey with the casino enforcer to get a second chance. They went in for the jackpot one last time and got caught. Ben and Jill then switched the chips for a bag of candy coins and Mickey was stuck in a limo with Cole’s thugs and Ben shocked the scholarship chairman with his “life lesson” in counting cards in Vegas.

Everything turned out fine in the end for him, but is the money really all that he went through? Most people would say no, however big risk, big reward; Bigger risk, bigger reward.
