Why Are People So Afraid Of MRI’s?

The other day I had to have an MRI on my back, because it has been killing me for the past few months. I have only had one other MRI in my life and it was on my head, but this time was different. They brought me into the MRI room and started to back me into the machine. My head first, then shoulders and finally put my entire body into the machine. Since the last time I had one, it was on my head, they didn’t need to bring me all the way in. However, I realized how enclosed you really are in there, I couldn’t move my hands to even scratch my head.

The only way you should be afraid of getting an MRI is if you are claustrophobic, otherwise, it is just annoying. Even with music, the noise of the machine drowned out everything else. The test lasted for 30 minutes and each image took about 3-6 minutes.

My suggestion is to just close your eyes and try to think about anything else. If you think about the machine at all, you can start to panic and that can cause problems with the test. I am not saying that everyone is afraid of MRI’s, just making an observation.
