The Economy Is Really Bad; I Got Laid Off From Work Today

There are certain things that I have got accustomed to over the past year while working for StudentCity.com. I loved my working environment, my co-workers, my responsibilities and the company itself. StudentCity is an amazing company with amazing people who give college students the experience that they deserve while on spring break. However, since the economy is horrible right now, a lot of parents can’t afford to send their son/daughter on spring break. Unfortunately for me, I was a casualty of this current economy. The past few months have been very hard with losing my father to cancer, having to sell my childhood house and now losing my job to the economy, but there is a plan. Even though I am still having trouble believing it, I know that everything will work out. Not to be super religious, but God wouldn’t give me anything that I couldn’t handle. I will figure out my job situation and who knows, this job might even be better for my career in web development.

I am in no way mad at StudentCity for letting me go, but I am saddened by how much I am going to miss working there. I was at the company for a year and three months and loved every minute of it. If anyone reading this wants to go on spring break, go to StudentCity.com, book a trip and have the best spring break experience of your life. Let them know that I said Hi, have fun and as StudentCity staffers always say, “See you on the beach”!

You should look into higher ed. BC, Northeastern and Harvard are hiring. Northeastern is looking for an Internet Systems Developer (http://www.higheredjobs.com/details.cfm?JobCode=175345228). May be right up your alley!

are you related to Harry Haroutunian? he was a professor at salem state. i worked with him about 10 yrs back.

as for higher ed — make sure it is private higher ed, not the state. no one is hiring there. for sure. i have a friend in the IT department at Simmons, and he’s always sending me jobs but I live way north of the city and loathe the commute that i have right now.

where do you live? i work in Salem MA for a small company called CBS. šŸ™‚ i’m not sure what you do, but if you wanted to email me your resume, i can pass it in to our development group.

to see what we do, go to shaws and look for the 40″ screen in produce or meat sections, which run ads and tips for food and stuff.

and the old cliche of doors and windows does apply. you may find that you launch upon a whole different line of work and life from this layoff. it happened to me in 2001, so i wish you the absolute best.

    Hey Tim,

You have a great attitude and I’m sure the optimism and outlook will serve you really well today – and in the future. We (humans) always get through one day at a time…you`ll find opportunities where you least expect them.

I work with http://www.studentcity.com from time to time on public relations assignments, which have always been positive, open and transparent. Indeed a good company to work and travel with.

    Best of luck

Hey Timothy, so it is already happening… In my part of the world, we await our time when we will be struck by this world economy crisis. Already, I’m hearing about the worsening situation of the Arabic Gulf countries.

However, I like your attitude… Indeed, your father has left a great son behind him.

    I’m praying for your bro,
